The Mountain Tunnel is an 18.9-mile-long in-service water tunnel that has been operating since 1925 and is part of the Hetch Hetchy Water Conveyance System located in Tuolumne County. Potable water travels 160 miles via gravity from Yosemite to the San Francisco Bay Area. Together with the Alameda and Peninsula watersheds, the system delivers approximately 260 million gallons of water per day. Water flows from east to west under gravity conditions through the tunnel towards Priest Reservoir. The South Fork Siphon Extension Improvements Project objectives are to: 1. Bypass the low cover and fractured rock section of the existing tunnel subject to leakage; 2. Restore original tunnel section; 3. Ensure a minimum 100-year service life; 4. Improve access to the siphon for unplanned emergency events, as well as routine inspection and maintenance; and 5. Improve road access with a minimum number of outages to complete the work and for future maintenance.
