The existing three continuous span steel stringer bridge with a reinforced concrete slab and asphalt wearing surface is proposed to be replaced with a single span adjacent prestressed concrete box beam structure with a 5-inch thick concrete slab and Hot Mix Asphalt pavement surface. The bridge width will be widened by about six-feet (out-to-out) and the profile will be slightly raised from the existing vertical alignment. The proposed bridge will be in the same general location with a slight adjustment to the vertical roadway alignment of less than 3 inches. The single span length will be 66’-0”, closely matching the existing overall bridge length. The bridge will provide a 22’-0” roadway width with one 11’- 0” travel lane in both the westbound and eastbound directions. A 5’-6” wide concrete sidewalk will be constructed on the northerly side of the bridge with an S3-TL4 Bridge Railing constructed along the outside of the sidewalk on the north and on the safety curb on the south. Existing overhead power lines will be temporarily relocated on the south side of the bridge. The bridge will be closed and a detour put in place during construction. For the proposed substructure, the existing piers will be partially demolished to make a single span of approximately the same overall length as the existing bridge. The new abutment consists of cantilever concrete abutment and U-Type wingwalls on spread footings and a gravel borrow foundation. A precast concrete guardrail transition will be installed at the northwest, northeast and southeast corners. At the southwest corner adjacent to the existing driveway, a modified curved concrete transition barrier with concrete footing will be installed. Rip-rap will be placed between the new abutment and the remaining portion of each pier stem. Riverbank restoration with rip-rap, live stake joint planting and various plantings will be placed along the west riverbank. The roadway approaches will be fully reconstructed due to raising of the roadway profile grade. Gravel borrow, dense graded crushed stone and Hot Mix Asphalt will be used for the roadway structure. New pavement markings and traffic signs will be added where needed, as well as all other incidental work within the project limits. The northerly side of the road will have a 5-6” sidewalk constructed, and guardrail will be installed on the northeasterly, northwesterly, and southeasterly corners of the bridge. The southwesterly side will not have guardrail since an existing driveway is present. The proposed design speed on this roadway section is 40 MPH. Bonds required. Prevailing wages.
